Etiopian päiväkirja, osa 3

Vietin 23-vuotis syntymäpäiväni Etiopiassa, tässä on päiväkirjani kyseiseltä päivältä:

Today started out pretty amazing with my birthday! After a breakfast and a round of machiatos we piled into the vehicles and headed out to the school for some painting.
The road out there is crazy bumpy and every time we drive outside of town almost every person yells and stares at us.
Once we got to the school we were brought to each classroom to be introduced to the students and were told that most of the students walk more then 5 kilometers to get to school and because they are learning in rooms with dirt floors there is always the possibility of parasites getting into their feet.
Afterwards we went and grabbed our paints cans and brushes and got to work painting the two buildings pink on the lower half with a blue stripe along the bottom. The plan had been to spend three days painting but we were much quicker they the school director had expected and we had the first coat on both buildings done by the afternoon.

We brought the table and chairs outside and took our break in the shade.  The hotel had sent food with us but that paled in comparison to the food the school brought out, fresh warm buns, bananas and nuts. I was most excited about the bananas as we haven’t had much fruit yet. I obviously couldn't eat the buns since I am a celiac, but it didn't really matter.

Once food was done we moved onto the second coat of the buildings which took about an hour.  Since we were done so quickly we moved onto the latrines and painted them blue. They created a smooth section in the cement on each of the two latrines to have us sign them. While we were painting there was a crowd of children watching us and waving each time we looked at them. Whenever we talked to them they would repeat the words we said so me and Jason got them started on an action song and they played along until being chased off by the school director and guard.

When we finished with the latrines we sat down again outside and laughed and waved at the kids that were crowding the fence to watch. Most of the kids and a lot of the adults have never seen foreigners before and are quite fascinated by us. My favourite part was when they started singing for us and when Chad went out with the video camera and got swarmed by excited kids. The children are adorable and just full of joy.

For the evening sessions we went to the youth group and it was amazing! I love watching them worship and pour themselves out to God. The songs are very heartfelt and there is a lot of response from the crowd. There was one song in particular that I really enjoyed and there was lots of clapping and jumping around.

It really is amazing watching the heart of the Ethiopians and just seeing the love they have for God. This has been the most amazing trip I have ever been on and I am loving it here. Everyday seems to be my favourite one and I am very excited to see what God has in store for us and to see how he will use the team to bless the Ethiopians.
